What is R-454, and Why Air Temp Refrigeration is Your Choice for Modern HVAC
At Air Temp, we are constantly evaluating our practices to ensure we operate within the ethical, environmentally-responsible standards set forth by the US government. One such change occurred in 2024, with a move from the older R-32 refrigerant to the new R-454 standard.
R-454 (most commonly R-454B) is a next-generation refrigerant developed as a lower-global-warming alternative to R-410A. It is a blended refrigerant made primarily from R-32 and R-1234yf, designed to meet new environmental regulations while maintaining similar performance to existing systems. R-454 has zero ozone depletion potential and a global warming potential of about 466, which is roughly 78% lower than R-410A, making it a more environmentally responsible choice for modern HVAC equipment.
In terms of safety, R-454 is classified as an ASHRAE A2L refrigerant, meaning it has low toxicity but is mildly flammable. Because of this, systems using R-454 must comply with updated safety standards that address leak detection, ventilation, proper system design, and technician handling procedures. While it introduces additional safety considerations compared to non-flammable refrigerants, it is still considered safe when used in properly designed and certified equipment.
Performance-wise, R-454 offers cooling capacity and energy efficiency that are very close to R-410A, making it well suited for residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps. It typically operates with slightly higher discharge temperatures, which manufacturers manage through system design. R-454 uses POE oils similar to R-410A systems but is not a drop-in replacement; it is intended for new equipment built specifically for A2L refrigerants rather than retrofitting existing systems.
Overall, R-454 represents a balance between environmental responsibility and system performance. It allows manufacturers to significantly reduce climate impact while maintaining familiar operating characteristics, although it requires new equipment designs, updated safety practices, and technician training to address its mild flammability.
